FOR BROKERS AND EMPLOYER GROUPS

Healthcare that holds up over time.

Rate spikes, carrier churn, member service that goes silent — most benefits wear out fast. For 90 years, we've built ours to hold up.

A 90-year nonprofit, built to stay in the game.

EMI Health started in 1935 as a welfare fund for Utah teachers — a group of people who needed reliable coverage and couldn't get it. That's still what we do.

Because we're a nonprofit, earnings don't go to shareholders. They go back into benefits, service, and holding premiums down. It's why we're still here, still stable, and still writing group medical, dental, and vision plans across eight states — Arizona, Georgia, Idaho, Michigan, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Texas, and Utah — plus individual dental and vision plans (including on the federal marketplace) across 22.

We're built differently — regional, nonprofit, and small enough that flexibility is possible. We lease access to the same major provider networks the big names use — same doctors, same hospitals — while running the business at a scale where service still means something. Level-funded plans are our specialty, and we've been writing them longer than most of the industry. Our pooled groups have stayed stable and grown for decades. That's the underwriting discipline behind the “built to hold up” claim.

1935
Founded by a group of teachers

Back then, the one-time membership fee was just $4, about $75 today. Over the next 90- plus years, we've grown into a full-service health insurance organization serving employer groups in both the public and commercial sectors.

A (Excellent)

AM Best rated reinsurance backing from AXIS

Every EMI Health plan is backed by AXIS Reinsurance, rated A (Excellent) by AM Best. Add our own reserves and the picture gets stronger. Regulators require insurers to hold capital against the risk they carry. We hold more than nine times that requirement, a 950%+ risk-based capital ratio. The promise behind every plan is funded, not just written.

Proof, before promises.

Anyone can promise good service. Here's what ours actually looks like.

Our medical trend was climbing year after year, and nothing we tried made a dent resulting in plan changes, higher deductibles, wellness pushes. When we renewed with EMI Health, they brought us a real plan: we implemented the Garner HRA.  Two years in, our rates have held steady for the first time in a decade. That stability changed how we budget.

Gary Wadman Industries

Our EMI Health account manager is the reason renewals and enrollment questions never pile up on my desk. She answers when I call, responds to emails the same day, and if something's off with a claim or an enrollment, she stays on it until it's resolved. I've worked with carriers where you're just a ticket number.  This has been just the opposite.

Sherrie Billings Construction

With EMI Health, I'm never guessing what's going on with my groups. I can call my rep directly and get a straight answer on a renewal, a claims issue, or an enrollment holdup. Usually the same day. With the big carriers, I'm chasing information through a call center. Here, I actually know the people handling my business, and that makes me look good to my clients.

Contact

Sales, portal help, billing, and general questions. Every way to reach the right team.

What working with EMI Health looks like.

Built for people tired of the tradeoff between "big enough to have the networks" and "small enough to actually pick up the phone."

Big-carrier network access, personal service.

We lease access to the same major provider networks the national names use. Same doctors, same hospitals. Because we're built regionally and small enough to know our accounts, the person who answers your call knows your book, your group, or your practice. Not just your policy number.

One invoice. One contact. A team that can actually help.

No toggling between vendors, portals, or phone trees. And when your clients need something the standard playbook doesn't fit, we're built to look at it. Flexibility isn't a policy exception around here.

Cost discipline on both sides of the plan.

Level-funded plans are our specialty. We've been writing them longer than most of the industry, and our pooled groups have stayed stable and grown for decades. Paired with tools members actually use: Recuro (telehealth), Lyra (mental health therapy), BeWell (wellness and coaching), Express Scripts (pharmacy), Garner (top-doctor finder). Underwriting discipline and real utilization tools are the two levers behind renewals that don't spike.

Is EMI Health a nonprofit?

Yes. EMI Health has been a nonprofit since a group of Utah teachers founded it in 1935. Earnings do not go to shareholders. They go back into benefits, service, and holding premiums down. A board of directors made up of members and industry experts oversees that mission.

What states does EMI Health cover?

EMI Health writes group medical, dental, and vision plans in Arizona, Georgia, Idaho, Michigan, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Texas, and Utah.

Individual and family dental, vision, and telemedicine plans are available in Alabama, Arizona, Colorado, Florida, Georgia, Idaho, Illinois, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Nevada, North Carolina, Ohio, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, Utah, Virginia, Washington, Wisconsin, and Wyoming.

What provider networks does EMI Health use?

EMI Health leases access to established national and regional networks rather than building its own, so members see the same doctors, dentists, and facilities the large carriers use.

Medical

Groups choose the network that fits their employees' geography:

  • Utah: EMI Health Care Plus utilizing the Intermountain Healthcare network, wrapped with Aetna or Cigna for nationwide coverage
  • Arizona: Aetna Signature National PPO, Cigna PPO, or Blue Cross Blue Shield of Arizona with a First Health wrap, plus the IMS Mexico network
  • Georgia, Idaho, Michigan, Ohio, Pennsylvania, and Texas: Aetna Signature National PPO or Cigna PPO
  • MEC plans use the First Health Limited Benefit Network

Dental

Plans access Aetna, Careington, Cigna, DenteMax, TDA, and EMI Health's own dental networks, with proprietary networks in Utah and Arizona. DHMO plans are available through the TDA network in Arizona and Utah.

Vision

All vision plans are powered by VSP, the largest vision network in the country, with 50,000+ providers including private optometrists and retail locations like Costco, Walmart, Sam's Club, Eyemart, and Visionworks.

Does EMI Health write level-funded plans?

Yes, and level funding is a specialty. A level-funded plan gives a group the flexibility and reporting of self-funding with the risk protection of a fully insured plan. If claims run higher than the premium collected, the group owes nothing more. If claims run lower, the group is eligible for 100 percent of the surplus. Groups join pooled arrangements with similar businesses, which spreads risk and steadies renewals.

How does EMI Health manage pharmacy costs?

Express Scripts is integrated as the pharmacy benefit manager on every EMI Health medical plan, under a partnership that has run more than 20 years. Pricing is pass-through with no added Rx administration fee, and rebates are returned to the group.

Specialty drugs drive most pharmacy spend, so several programs target them directly. SaveOnSP brings member cost to $0 on select specialty medications, in partnership with Express Scripts and Accredo Specialty Pharmacy. Enrollment is voluntary, and amounts paid under the program do not apply toward the deductible or out-of-pocket maximum. Price Assure charges the lowest of the EMI discount, cash price, or GoodRx price. The Patient Assurance Program caps many diabetic drugs, including insulin, at $25.

How fast does EMI Health pay claims?
